Let’s face it; we didn’t move to Spain for the shepherd’s pie.
We came for the sun, the pace, the siestas, and maybe a cheaper pint or two.
But every now and then, there’s a pang. A craving. A longing for something comforting, familiar, and very British.
And that’s where the lost art of British home cooking quietly stirs again.
Remember when dinner actually meant something?
Back in the day, cooking wasn’t about trends, macros, or air fryers.
It was about real food, made with care; and maybe a bit of overboiled veg ;-)
We grew up on:
- Stews that simmered all afternoon
- Roast dinners that were a proper event
- Puddings that stuck to your ribs (and the dish)
These meals weren’t fancy. They were honest. Hearty. And completely satisfying.
So what happened?!?
Life sped up. Microwave meals became the norm. And somewhere along the way, British home cooking got left behind.
Even here in Spain, surrounded by fresh produce, it’s surprisingly hard to find a proper cottage pie, a decent fish pie, or a crumble that doesn't taste like packet mix.
Let alone make it yourself in +30-degree heat.
Who wants to roast a joint when the ceiling fan’s already on full blast?
But now, something’s changing
More and more expats are quietly rediscovering the joy of British classics, without having to dust off the old pressure cooker.
Whether it’s through food deliveries, pop-up dinners, or homemade hacks, nostalgic British meals are making a gentle comeback. And honestly? It's about time.
We’re realising that:
- Food is memory.
- A good pie can taste like home.
- And yes; a bit of proper gravy can still fix a lot.
The rise of “heat and eat”; for people who know better
Now before you worry: this isn’t about sad supermarket ready-meals.
We’re talking about proper, chef-prepared British classics that you just heat and enjoy.
For example, at DinDins (yes, cheeky plug) we’ve started cooking the things we missed ourselves, from scratch, with love, and delivering them across Spain.
Think:
- Steak & Ale Pie
- Fish Pie with cheesy mash
- Proper Mash & Bangers
- Roast Pork that tastes like your nan made it
It’s food that feels familiar, but doesn’t need a shopping list, a hot kitchen, or a cleanup operation afterwards.
“It’s not just dinner, it’s a little bit of home.”
That’s something a customer told us recently.
And honestly, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
Because this isn’t about going backwards.
It’s about holding on to the things that matter, flavour, comfort, and maybe a bit of nostalgia, even while living under the Spanish sun.
