Grandma Kate, was born in Southampton in the early 1900’s and by the age of 15 was working for the local gentry as a scullery maid in an upstairs downstairs gentry house. It was here she learnt to cook good food for her employer’s family and later for her own 11 children and hungry husband Sam who worked at Southampton Docks loading the ships Titanic, Mauritania and the Lucitania. As a family they were poor, so homegrown produce, homemade pastry and locally produced food was all they could afford, but her young family ate well even through the war years between 1940/44 and throughout the rationing years.
Kates long lasting legacy was her love of cooking, and she passed her skills and knowledge to her 5 daughters (the 5 sons didn't really cook in those days!) the girls all became accomplished cooks passing their skills to the next generation and to the next. Her grandchildren are cooking some of the original recipes she passed down to her own children and I assist our chefs to produce these meals for you. We hope you enjoy them as much as my family have over the years.
